Meet the Team
Banner Art by Megan Lee
Sam BuckI was drawn into this position because of my passion for writing and was lucky to be able to write the letter from the editor. This magazine represents the beauty of collaboration with peers to me and finding community with people who I had never met.
Sage WestAs a creative writer, dedicated to the promotion of artistic perspectives; participating in discussions of social justice and cultivating dissent; whose work emphasizes the protection of the voice, the lived experience, and the value of emotional discourse, I have been readily drawn to SLAM. This zine is for students defying assimilation and resisting the systems in place that dictate their personal expression and development.

Emily ChenI see this litmag as a last chance at leaving my mark at this university before I graduate.
Nico LugoI was drawn into the position of an editor since I really enjoy writing. I've also done editing before on group assignments and research essays, so this was a natural position for me. This litmag gives me an opportunity to express myself in a creative way. I think this litmag means having the opportunity to share our perspectives and experiences in a manner that's both raw and unfiltered. It's a way to authentically highlight the untold narratives here at UCSD.
Shridhi SinghviWhat drew me to the position was the opportunity to create a space where people could be honest, messy, and real. The litmag isn’t just a collection of work, it’s a reflection of a part of ourselves that we don’t always get to show. It means creating something meaningful together, something that makes others feel seen.

Betsy VieraWhat this litmag means to me is a safe space to voice who I really am, with no judgment. Its also inspiring to see other people use their voice to express whatever they are feeling, who they are, and what they are fighting for, etc.
Arya SinghTo me, the Litmag is a space of expression. A place where I can be honest, unfiltered and unafraid. It’s where thoughts that don’t always fit in the classroom find a home. It’s a canvas for my questions, my contradictions, and my position. Through it, I connect with others not by conforming, but by being fully myself. It’s not just about being heard. It’s about being seen.
Sarina Miziantyi was drawn to this position because i like writing and editing and i have prior experience with zinemaking. to me the litmag is a diy zine that takes creation away from typical academic standards to create space for student self expression.

Eamon HennesseyI love to read and write. The litmag is a way for students to express themselves and share feelings.
Allyson HullI chose to be editor because I wanted to help create the overall tone and feel for the zine. I also wanted to make sure that everyone’s voices were being heard and represent as they are, and not want we want them to be. This lit mag is a space for us as students, or even as the UCSD community, to come together and find solace in each others experiences and to have an outlet to express our true selves, raw and uncensored.

Elizabeth LuevandI was drawn to a design position because I've always liked visual arts and graphic design, so forming a vision for the literary magazine seemed like a fun way to exercise these skills. This litmag is a culmination of so many different voices from all sorts of different backgrounds speaking out about how this school makes them feel, so I believe it's an extremely important outlet for voicing student dissent.
Weihong ZhongWhat drew me into this position was the opportunity to create something meaningful with others. I’ve always liked visual storytelling, so joining the litmag felt like a natural way to express myself and connect with others who care about creativity.

Liana Davoudithe Litmag is where creativity meets purpose. Im drawn to visual storytelling and how powerful colors and layouts, can shape the raw emotions of writers. Being a designer has allowed me to hone in my creative skills by also uplifting the voices of others by creating a space that is intentional, inclusive, and inspiring.
Mia ZhangI joined the print design team because I love working on layout and visuals. The litmag means a lot to me because it’s a place where everyone’s voice matters.

Megan LeeLitmags are a wonderful way of bringing creatives together, allowing us to celebrate our lived experiences and identities. I took on the role of Designer because I like making information visually accessible, whether it is through web design, making illustrations, or text formatting. It is an honour to work in a role I deeply adore.
Michelle FaucettI wanted to work as a designer because I enjoy being creative, and I wanted to help contribute my artistic skills to the design and organization of our zine. Our Lit Mag is special to me because I value the community we are fostering and the space we are providing for students to share their voices.

Jackie CarreonWhat drew me to the design team was my passion for creating visual elements and art, as well as expanding my skills within such art. The lit mag, for me, offers a space of your own where you can express yourself and inspire others.
Jackson BernsteinThe role I am most drawn to is that of design. I have always been interested in the looks of things, the graphics used and how it is arranged. I have skills in video editing, basic graphic design, and basic website design, all of which I think can be applied to the digital print of the magazine itself.

Theresa PhamI was drawn into the position and outreach team because I have had experience with event planning and coordination, therefore I thought programming the release event would be best fit for me. I also wanted to be a part of promoting the litmag to open doors for students who are looking for opportunities to share their voices and narratives. The litmag to me means an opportunity for a variety of support and community, one that allows students to connect with each other while also understanding each other’s diverse identities and perspectives.
Rodrigo HernandezWhat drew me into joining the outreach team was finding ways to share the news about our litmag to my UCSD committee. To me the litmag is a representation of CAT 124 and the experiences we've had so far at UCSD and is a way for us to share those experiences to connect better with others.
|
Cristina MendozaOutreach was the most appealing to me because it was the position that best fit my skills. I have experience with creating posts on Instagram and general outreach. The LitMag is a really fun and different opportunity for me since I have never been a part of something like this. It has been a great experience to get to publish our magazine.
Emily RazoThe litmag offers UCSD students a space to share their creative ideas, expressions and experiences to reflect the collective and diverse essence of UCSD, drawing me into a position where I felt I could make an impact in spreading the word for voices who often feel underrepresented or invalidated.
|
Christina VargasTo me this litmag was a chance for us to build a space for UCSD students to share their experiences not only as students but as people. It is about visibility, representation, and connection. I joined the Outreach team in hopes to help create this space where people could feel seen and celebrate one another's stories. I was especially excited to plan the release event which felt like a happy ending to our work, but an exciting beginning to the discussions that this zine might inspire.
Andrew DangI was drawn to this position because I believe that SLAM’s goal of giving voices to the ignored and unheard is something we overlook all too often. UCSD humanities and arts programs are just as valuable as their more “popular” STEM departments.
|
Yu-Wei ChenAs a student with a background in Economics who took some courses in marketing and consumer psychology before, I am drawn to the Outreach role because it aligns with my skills and experiences perfectly. My previous experience in sponsorship acquisition and social media management in Taiwan has honed my ability to engage with audiences and build meaningful connections. I am eager to apply these skills in an English-speaking context. The litmag means the way that not only speaks my voice but also amplifies the parts of myself that the world has no language for. The litmag is the antidote to the unsaid and a place where silence splinters into meaning.

BECCA ROSECAT 124 PROFESSORI started this class because a literary arts magazine can be many things: a conduit for sharing art and writing, a resource for students to share individual and collective experiences, a subversive tool of independent publishing that gets to create its own mission outside of capitalist or institutional limits. I wanted students of Sixth College to be able to tell their stories and to create community together in the process—and oh have they risen to the occasion with tenacity and compassion. This is my dream class; I am so grateful to these students for taking that dream and running with it.
